Salem Community College

Salem Community College (SCC) offers associate degrees (A.A., A.F.A., A.S. and A.A.S.) and certificates in over 40 liberal arts, business, nursing and technology programs of study.

While under the leadership of President Peter B. Contini since 1997, the College has been guided by comprehensive strategic planning leading to:

  • the establishment of many degree programs, including Glass Art, Computer Graphic Art, Forensic Science, Nuclear Energy, Sustainable Energy and Nursing;
  • the expansion of instructional technology; and
  • the completion of over $10 million in facility renovations and new construction.

The result of these efforts has been continued enrollment growth reflected by a nearly 50 percent increase since fall 2004.

Through a $1.7 million federal grant, SCC created the innovative Nuclear Energy Technology (NET) and Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) programs. Offered in high-tech classrooms and state-of-the-art laboratories, the programs are designed to produce workers for the growing nuclear energy industry as well as the burgeoning “green” industries. SCC partners with PSEG Nuclear for NET and Energy Freedom Pioneers for SET.

Salem Community College features the only Scientific Glass Technology associate degree program in the United States. The program celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.

The College’s glass courses are taught in the new Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center in Alloway. The 10,000-square-foot Paul J. Stankard Studio and Lab has enabled SCC to offer a new Associate Degree in Fine Arts (A.F.A.) degree program in Glass Industrial Design and expand the A.F.A. option in Glass Art.  Glass Art students are in the nation’s only associate degree program using the flameworking process.

Salem Community College also offers a Practical Nursing program, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2008, and an Associate Degree in Nursing for licensed practical nurses. Both programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the N.J. Board of Nursing. Associate Degree in Nursing students may take advantage of SCC’s dual-admission agreements with Wilmington University and Wesley College.
